The Gateway was built to commemorate the royal visit of King George V in 1911 and was finally opened in 1924. It is a fine specimen of British architecture; this conventional Arch of Triumph has elements of Muslim architectural styles of 16th century in its design. Made of yellow basalt, the Gateway stands facing out to Mumbai Harbour from the tip of Apollo Bunder. Today it is a favourite gathering spot for locals to just stroll around and enjoy the horse drawn gilded carriages ride known as Victorias. The Gateway stands opposite another well known landmark of Mumbai “The Taj Mahal Palace and Tower Hotel”.

Mumbai’s biggest and best museum also known as “Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya” was opened in 1923 to commemorate King George V’s first visit to India in 1905. The building displays an intriguing style of Islamic, Hindu and British architecture, its flamboyant Indo – Saracenic style was designed by George Wittet. The museum has an excellent and vast collection of rare and ancient exhibits of Indian history with impressive Hindu and Buddhist sculpture, terracotta figurines from the Indus Valley, miniature paintings, porcelain and some particularly vicious weaponry.

Another famous spot to travel in Mumbai during group tour of India is Marine Drive that is a 3 km long avenue, which is shaped like an inverted “C”. It has six lanes which run along the coast. The chief attraction of Marine Drive is the Promenade, officially known as Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Road. It also affords fabulous views of sunset. The art deco apartments from the 1920’s to the 1930’s on the seafront belong largely to the wealthy Parsi community. Marine Drive is also known as the Queen’s Necklace, for when night falls, and the street lights are switched on, its unique shape makes it look like a glittering necklace. Chowpatty Beach is one of the favourite evening spot for everyone to enjoy a relaxing time and enjoying the local food delights like Bhel Puri, Pani Puri and Mumbai’s snacks at the throng of stalls found here.
